Orleans Women’s Tennis Club

MINUTES – October 12, 2006

  • The annual meeting of Orleans Women’s Tennis Club commenced at City Park with a prayer invoked by Alana Yuratich.
  • Following the prayer, Gwen Pablovich read a letter to the Membership, which she had prepared, thanking the Board of Directors, the Grounds Committee and the Nominating Committee for their assistance during the past two years, especially those who did so much to help in keeping Orleans Women’s Tennis Club together.   She tried to explain the situation the Club was left in post Katrina and the daunting job the Board had in trying to work with the Board of City Park to get a proposal to keep the Club in City Park, which has always been home to the Club.
  • I was unable to read the Minutes from the last meeting as I do not have a printer yet due to Katrina and Gwen’s computer was down and, also, unable to print the minutes.  We disregarded my report.
  • Shirley Toner, Treasurer, handed out the Treasury Report.  As of September 30, 2004 the Treasury had a balance of $16, 597.44.  The balance in the Treasury as of October 12, 2006 was $7,147.09.  Carolyn Kramer made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report, which was seconded by Vyeann Jones.
  • Teeda Ebeier, 2nd Vice President and Membership Chairman, also lost her records due to Hurricane Katrina, but gave an oral report of the current status of members.  As of October 12, 2006, the Club has approximately 100 members.  This number leaves 50 openings for new members.
  • Gwen Pablovich took the floor and explained the difficult situation the Officers of the Club were in post Katrina with trying to find a place for the members to play.  We were approached by WOW Tennis Center and began to work with the Manager to arrive at a workable price for the members to pay.  Although the Officers had been trying to work with City Park since January of 2006 to secure our contract with them, it wasn’t until August that City Park ’s Board took notice of the situation and began to work with the Club.
  • Joan Wolverton, 1st Vice President, gave her report on working for the Club in the best and worst of conditions.  She also went into the talks that commenced with both WOW Tennis Center and with City Park .  She also thanked the Board for their help during the past months of confusion.  Joan also explained that to continue to play at City Park, the members will have to increase their dues to $200.00 per year.
  • Judy Ruisch asked where was WOW Tennis Center and was told that those courts are a UNO.
  • Marilyn Brandt passed out a paper with the names from the Nominating Committee for the new Officers for the Board of the Club, 2006 - 2007.  They are as follows:
  • President                    -           Carolyn Kramer
  • 1st Vice President       -           Vyeann Jones
  • 2nd Vice President      -           Andre Boothe
  • Secretary                    -           Shirley Toner
  • Treasurer                   -           Carolyn Abadie
  • The nominations were all accepted by acclamation.  The above will be the Officers from October 2006 through October 2007.  The Nominating Committee consisted of Marilyn Brandt, Vyeann Jones, Carolyn Kramer, and Anne Lea.
  • Carolyn Kramer discussed briefly the necessity to amend the By-Laws prior to voting to change the Club’s home courts.  Joan Wolverton explained that she had taken the By-Laws to an attorney many months ago, who said they were legitimate, but the Club did have the flexibility to change such things as dates and other conditions to meet certain situations.  Post Katrina would have fallen under such a catastrophic situation.
  • Wilma Longstreet made a suggestion that we forego the By-Laws considering the post Katrina catastrophe the Club was put in.
  • Joan Doyle made a motion to change the By-Laws.  Michen Houser made a motion that we keep the Club at City Park and pay the extra $100 in dues.  The motion was seconded by Judy Rusich.  By a show of hands, the vote was unanimous to keep Orleans Women’s Tennis Club at City Park , at this time.
  • Wilma Longstreet questioned the Court Rules to which Gwen could only give her the Rules verbally.  When a new Membership book comes out, the new rules will be in the book.  Teeda answered by saying we have the two far courts on both sides, according to Lee Rhodes who is with the Men’s Club.
  • Emily Garland wanted to know if we had the Men’s courts in situations of OWTC League play.  Gwen suggested that we pay for leagues in advance.
  • B. J. Johnson reminded the ladies of the need to use our Web Site, which is owtcno.com.
  • Gwen asked the Members who would volunteer to be on the new Grounds Committee besides the 1st Vice President, Vyeann Jones and the 2nd Vice President, Andre Boothe.  The following members volunteered to join the Grounds Committee:  Anne Lea, Marion Jackson, Barbara Comarda and Wilma Longstreet.
  • Shirley Toner’s address was given to Members so they would be able to send their checks for their dues.
  • A motion to close the annual meeting was made by Teeda Ebeier and seconded by Cheryl Wertz.

Respectfully submitted by:
